A ‘Life-Saving’ Step

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) continues its efforts in line with the ‘Healthy Campus’ philosophy. To enable rapid intervention in emergency health situations such as sudden cardiac arrest and arrhythmia, the University has installed 5 Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices, developed by ASELSAN, in the campus's most frequently used areas. Thanks to these state-of-the-art devices that offer quick and effective intervention in cases ending with sudden cardiac arrest, an important step towards increasing the safety of students, academic, and administrative staff has been taken.
The introduction of the AED devices was attended by IUE Rector, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, and Director of the Vocational School of Health Services, Prof. Dr. Sevinç İnan. Expressing his satisfaction with the project's implementation, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “A healthy campus is not only about physical conditions but also about being prepared for emergencies. Every second is precious in life-threatening events like heart attacks. These devices form the basis of a system that significantly increases the chance of saving lives. Having such an infrastructure established on our campus is a concrete indicator of our social responsibility and preventive health approach. We are proud to be one of the first foundation universities to implement this system.”
STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY
AED devices are designed to be easily used by anyone, without requiring a specialist. Activated by a green button, the device guides the user step-by-step with audio and visual instructions. When connected to the patient's body, the device automatically assesses their condition. If an electric shock is not needed, it issues a warning: ‘The patient's vital functions are sufficient, call 112 and wait.’ In situations where a shock is required, it encourages the user to intervene with instructions. Furthermore, usage information can be easily accessed via QR codes located in the special cabinets where the devices are placed. When the device case is opened, an automatic emergency notification is also sent to the campus medical team.
