The Gender and Women's Studies Research and Application Center (EKOKAM) at Izmir University of Economics has launched a series of events aimed at fostering safe relationships among young people to help prevent violence against women. As part of a mandatory orientation course for students, videos were prepared to explain the characteristics of safe relationships and provide examples of abusive ones. The videos also offered guidance on how young people can protect themselves (https://youtube/VWloubFLhko). Additionally, as part of the Erasmus project ‘Unite for Equality’, a meeting was held at Nazilli Anadolu High School, where teachers from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway, and Portugal received training.

“VIOLENCE IS THE BIGGEST BARRIER”

EKOKAM Director Prof. Dr. Gönül Dinç Horasan said, “Violence against women is one of the greatest obstacles to protecting and advancing women's rights. At its core lies gender inequality, rooted in patriarchal social structures that hinder women’s access to social, economic, political, and health rights. Gender inequality exists in varying degrees in all societies. Therefore, reducing these inequalities is essential to preventing violence against women."

Emphasizing the importance of strengthening women and fostering safe relationships within society are critical to addressing violence against women, Prof. Dr. Horasan said, “At EKOKAM, we consider promoting safe relationships among young people to be a priority. We have developed educational tools and initiated ongoing educational programs to address this issue.”
