They redesigned waste denim fabrics
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Textile and Fashion Design prepared stylish and eco-friendly designs by reusing waste denim pieces. Young fashion designers, who used the defective and surplus denim products of Lee and Wrangler brands within Karma Marka Mağazacılık, received great acclaim with their special collections.
Young people, who carried out an exemplary work to raise awareness about preventing fabric waste in the fashion industry, drew attention with their innovative approach. The designs selected at the end of the project will be exhibited in the store windows of Lee and Wrangler brands in Istanbul and Izmir on May 19, Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day. In addition, IUE students who stand out with their creative ideas will have the opportunity to take part in sectoral projects to be determined by Lee and Wrangler brands within Karma Marka Mağazacılık.
10 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED
Third year students Beril Ortaç, Defne Su Arkalı, Doğa Aral, Ilgar Derin Özgüneş, Mobina Agahi, Münevver Günaylı, Nevşah Liva Tekbalcı, Pegah Farhoomand Tehrani, Yaren Gibyeli and Yaren İştenoğlu prepared their designs as part of the course titled ‘Fashion Design Studio: Collection 3’ course. Young people from IUE made presentations to the jury, which included academics as well as Uğur Gülce, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director of Karma Marka Mağazacılık. In this way, young designers had the opportunity to gain experience and improve their business network.
CRAFT-ORIENTED DESIGN
Stating that the students created innovative, creative and craft-oriented designs by using the upcycling method in the denim product category, Elif Tekcan, Lecturer at IUE Department of Textile and Fashion Design, said, “In this project, which prioritizes the principles of ‘quality education’, ‘industry, innovation and infrastructure’, ‘sustainable cities and communities’ and ‘responsible production and consumption’ among the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, IUE students successfully demonstrated their creativity. The materials provided by Lee and Wrangler enabled the students to gain awareness on the utilization of textile waste generated during production. At this point, I can say that we have achieved our goal and realized a very useful work. I would like to thank our project partners Lee and Wrangler and Uğur Gülce, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director of Karma Marka Mağazacılık, who supported us during the project process, and congratulate all students.”
