International Honor for an IUE Professor
Prof. Dr. Gül Akdoğan from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Medicine has been appointed to a prestigious international position. Prof. Dr. Akdoğan has been selected as the Head of the Accreditation Commission for the Organization for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS), which includes members from 42 countries. Prof. Dr. Akdoğan will work to improve the quality of doctoral education internationally, providing support to graduate schools, faculties, departments, research students, and advisors through professional training.
A congratulations plaque was presented to Prof. Dr. Gül Akdoğan, who also serves as the Head of the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at IUE Faculty of Medicine, by Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu and Dean Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin in recognition of her achievements. Having organized more than 50 educational meetings and workshops across various European countries related to undergraduate and graduate education and authored nearly 100 international publications, Prof. Dr. Akdoğan is set to represent our country exceptionally well with her knowledge and experience.

Giving information about the activities of ORPHEUS, Prof. Dr. Akdoğan said, “Institutions that provide doctoral education in the field of health can become members of ORPHEUS. The main goal is to make doctoral education in health sciences and biomedicine across European countries perfect, offering young researchers a bright future in a competitive environment. ORPHEUS collaborates with the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), and it has previously developed the ‘Good Practice Guidelines’ for doctoral education. The ORPHEUS Accreditation (Label) Commission aims to help institutions offering doctoral programs in biomedical and health sciences across Europe reflect on their programs within the framework of these guidelines. The commission provides institutions with a comprehensive and flexible procedure to support their self-evaluation process. Members of the commission include representatives from universities in Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, France, Croatia, and Portugal.”
Prof. Dr. Akdoğan expressed her happiness and pride in taking on such a meaningful and important role and stated her desire to conduct impactful and high-quality work.
